Is Your Homepage Working Hard Enough? Here’s What It Should Be Doing

Your homepage is your digital front door. And just like the real world, first impressions count.

If someone lands on your site and doesn’t quickly understand who you are, what you do, or how you can help them, they’re more likely to click away than click through.

In fact, if they can’t figure that out within five seconds, it’s time to give your homepage a little love.

So what does a hardworking homepage actually look like?

Here’s a simple, proven homepage layout that helps businesses boost clarity, build trust, and increase conversions 👇

🔝 ABOVE THE FOLD

(That’s the part you see before you start scrolling)

1️⃣ Header
Include your logo, navigation menu, and a strong call-to-action (CTA). Think:
👉 “Order Now”
👉 “Book a Call”
👉 “Get a Quote”

2️⃣ Hero Section
This is your moment to grab attention.
Your hero section should include:

  • A compelling headline that explains what you offer

  • A subheading that explains who it's for

  • A clear, simple Call To Action (CTA)

  • A striking image or short video

Ask yourself: Could someone understand what we do - and what to do next - in seconds?

⬇️ BELOW THE FOLD

(Everything your visitors see when they start scrolling down)

3️⃣ Services or Product Highlights
Use icons, images, or short text blocks to show what you offer at a glance. Each one should link to more detail (and yes - include another CTA).

4️⃣ How It Works
A short 3-4 step explainer of your process builds trust. Make it easy to understand how someone gets started or what to expect next.

5️⃣ Social Proof
Include testimonials from happy clients or logos of companies you’ve worked with. It’s not bragging - it’s reassurance. This is key to building trust.

6️⃣ Clear Next Step
Give visitors something to do - whether that’s filling out a contact form, booking a free call, or sending an enquiry. Keep it easy and obvious.

7️⃣ Footer
Your footer should include:

  • Contact info

  • Links to social media

  • Key legal pages (privacy, cookies, terms & conditions)

Bonus Tip:

Make sure it works just as well on mobile as it does on desktop. For many businesses, the majority of website visitors are on their phones - so mobile-first design is non-negotiable.
