Why We Started WeeBit Digital (and Why Small Business IT Still Needs Fixing)

We shouldn’t still be having this conversation - but here we are.

IT for small businesses is still broken.

In 2010, co-founder and owner Dave Livesey started a business with one simple goal: to make IT easier for everyone. Back then, the big shift was to the cloud - moving small businesses away from clunky, unreliable (and expensive) on-premise servers like Microsoft Small Business Server and into more flexible, scalable tools like Google Apps (now Google Workspace). Email, calendars, and file sharing were suddenly within reach – and that was just the beginning.

Since then, some things have improved, but too much has stayed the same.

What’s Got Better

Today, Google Workspace, Office 365 and other smaller providers such as Zoho have now made email, calendar and collaboration software more fit for purpose than ever before, and are a fairly well known and understood beast. If your business is big enough to have someone reasonably tech-savvy, getting started with these tools is relatively straightforward.

But beyond that?

Still a mess. Even now, in a world full of “plug and play” apps and off-the-shelf solutions, small business owners still struggle to bring it all together.

Because IT is still a minefield

Let’s say you’re a new business owner – a chiropodist who’s excellent at what they do. You’re ready to set up a home clinic and offer mobile appointments. You’re great with feet, but not with tech. You need the basics: a business name, a logo, a website, a domain and email address, online booking, a calendar, maybe even some business cards with a QR code. Where do you begin? There are plenty of people offering to build you a website for a decent price – but what about everything else? How does it all connect? And who can help you make sense of the jargon, make the right decisions, and get set up without overpaying or overcomplicating things?

That’s where many new business owners get stuck: not knowing where to begin, how it all fits together, or who to trust. What they need is someone to take the pressure off - to set up the essentials properly, make sure everything works together seamlessly, and leave them free to focus on what they’re great at: looking after their clients.

What about existing businesses trying to grow?

Imagine an artisan candle maker who has turned their passion into a growing business and starts to attract corporate orders. Things are going well - until the admin catches up with them.

They need a better way to track orders. Maybe a system that links with their accounting software. Maybe a portal for their clients. They start researching, but quickly find themselves lost in jargon. There are companies that will tell you what you need, and do the technical work to build and configure the software to do what it needs to, but the big corporate ones are too expensive, and the ones you can afford as a sole trader can be a lottery. You might be lucky, or you might not.

The biggest issue being that you don’t understand the tech, the language, and the software development process well enough to understand when you are being taken for a ride.

These are the scenarios we’ve seen play out again and again. And it’s why WeeBit Digital exists.
